Hillhouse was the son of John Paton Hillhouse and was born in Bedford on 17 December 1850. He was educated at Bedford Modern School,〔''Bedford Modern School of the Black and Red'', Andrew Underwood (1981)〕〔''Cambridge University Alumni, 1261-1900'' Educated at Bedford under Finlinson〕 and at Trinity College, Cambridge.〔 He was co-founder of the Bedfordshire Natural History Society (1875), Assistant Curator of the Cambridge Herbarium (1878–82), co-founder and co-editor of the Cambridge Review (1879)〔 and also served as Chairman of the Birmingham Botanical and Horticultural Society. Hillhouse was made a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London in 1876 and was the first Professor of Botany at the University of Birmingham. He died in Malvern on 27 January 1910.
